BIOGRAPHY:
Kuznetsov, Nikolai Dmitrievich - painter of everyday scenes and portrait painter, son of a large landowner in the Kherson province.Born on December 2, 1850 in the Stepanovka estate of the Kherson province of the Odessa district (now the Odessa region) in the family of a Kherson landowner, captain Dmitry Mikhailovich Kuznetsov. The Kuznetsov family firmly settled in the Odessa district. The brothers of Dmitry Mikhailovich - Lieutenant Lev Mikhailovich, Staff Captain Konstantin Mikhailovich, Lieutenant Nikolai Mikhailovich were military men and landowners of the Odessa district.Dmitry Mikhailovich himself owned villages in this district: Novomarinovka, Konstantinovka, Dmitrovka, Stepanovka, Maryanovka, Pshonyanoe. Nicholas received his education at the Odessa Gymnasium. The teaching weighed on him. He did not show any inclination for science and left the gymnasium in the 7th grade. In the village, he leads a free life of a carefree barchuk, and hunting is his favorite pastime. His mother, Klavdia Gavrilovna Kuznetsova (nee Leontovich), discovers that her son has a penchant for drawing and takes him to Odessa, to a family friend, the artist F.D. Malman, one of the best teachers of the Odessa Drawing School. At the same time, the boy showed enviable abilities, but then he was not fond of fine arts. When Nikolai was 26 years old, he, being from a military family, possessing outstanding physical abilities, decides to go to St. Petersburg and enter the Guards Lancers. The commander of the guards lancers, Baron Essen, was ill. N.D. didn't get an appointment with him.Under the influence of passion for traveling art exhibitions, he began to practice painting and soon entered the Imperial Academy of Arts, from which he received three silver medals. In 1879, at the insistence of I.N. Kramskoy and I.I. Shishkin, he leaves the Academy and returns to Stepanovka, where, together with A.P. Razmaritsyn, continues to paint."Zarobitchans" came to the Kuznetsov estate for field work from the Volyn province. Among the workers, Nikolai liked the girl. The feeling turned into love. Nikolai's mother opposed the marriage and fired the workers. Nikolai, having shown perseverance and courage, returned the workers and Hanna, that was the name of the girl and future wife.Officially N.D. married A.G. Protsenko, the daughter of a retired warrant officer, in the Edinoverie Assumption Church in Odessa on February 5, 1888, their marriage was formalized when they already had two children. One of the witnesses was Kiriyak Kostandi. In 1887 he became one of the founders of the Association of South Russian Artists (TYURH) and a regular participant in its exhibitions; participated in international exhibitions and exhibitions of Russian art abroad. In the same year, together with his younger brother D.D. Kuznetsov and K.K. Kostandi tour Europe. In 1889, an event occurred that, as many believe, was a turning point for Nikolai Dmitrievich. Demonstrating his strength in front of his brother and acquaintances, holding two people on his shoulders, he lifted a thirty-two pood woman lying on the ground. As a result, he stretched his ligaments. For many years after that, he had to move on crutches. I had to work while sitting. In 1880 he visited Germany and France, where he met I.P. Pokhitonov. In the same year, his first daughter Marusya was born.He began to exhibit his works in 1881 at the exhibitions of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibition. In 1900 the Art Gallery was opened. Her collection included paintings by I. Repin, V. Serov, I. Kramskoy, V. Vasnetsov, I. Pokhitonov, paintings by French artists of the Champ de Mars Salon, artists J. Alexander, L. Delamo, C. Cotte, G. Latouche, F Taulova, etc. This gallery played a significant role in determining the creative views of Odessa painters.1893 he moved to work in Odessa. In 1897 he was appointed professor - head of the workshop of battle painting, but held this position for only two years. He often traveled abroad, getting acquainted with contemporary foreign artists and acquiring their works, which formed his gallery, one of the best in southern Russia. Nikolai Kuznetsov did not accept the revolution, he did not see a place for himself in post-revolutionary Russia, and in 1920 he emigrated. The artist settled in Yugoslavia, where a significant part of Russian emigrants then settled. He lived in the cities of Vzhesh, Bela Tserkva, Rijeka and Sarajevo. He painted mostly commissioned portraits. Participated in the Exhibition of Russian Painting and Sculpture at the Brooklyn Museum (1923) and the Exhibition of the Association of Russian Artists in the Kingdom of the Union of Artists (1928).In February 1929, the artist Nikolai Kuznetsov died. Buried in Sarajevo.
