Description
Circa 1870, Upcountry, South Carolina, likely by the potter John Whelchel. The jar having an excellent form with nicely thrown rim having ribs and bold flare above tab handles at each side leading down to flared body having a very rich alkaline glaze and the piece is centered at the upper body with incised JW / 4. The vessel is in good overall condition with no chips, cracks or restoration. H17 3/4" Sold from the collection of Betty & Ralph Jennings of Gaffney, South Carolina.
