Heinke 12 Bolt Pearler Diving Helmet 1871-1922

Description

Offered here is a seldom seen type of diving helmet in the United States made by the C.E. Heinke Company. Located in London, this company produced diving helmets and related equipment from 1844 until 1961. Their hats have a characteristic appearance evident in this example.

This helmet was discovered in Hawaii, where it had been in the same family for decades. The helmet is a 12 bolt Pearler model, used in the pearling industry. The helmets configuration allowed for a diver to look down easier while doing this specialized work.

This helmet features the serial number 1864 on the the breastplate. The brails and wing nuts are long gone. We have been unable to get the bonnet and breastplate threaded together. The neck ring on one half may be very slightly out of round. The lack of a neck ring gasket also make the job more difficult. Likely with some patience and skill these two parts could be threaded. The inner bonnet air vents are present as well as glass. We did get the inner brass glass retaining rings all loosened. The patina that this helmet has formed over the decades is stunning.

All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that will match the number on a tamperproof hologram decal placed inside the helmet. This information will be kept on permanent file at Nations Attic and help ensure the provenance of the helmet and authenticity.

The Nations Attic exclusive display stand is not included. A stand will be made available to the high bidder at a reduced sale price after the auction.
