Description
A very rare iron strongbox, the iron clad exterior is secured with flower-head shaped rivets & sided by forged handles, the hinged lid opening to a complex multi-gear lock mechanism fronted by a foliate pierced brass grille, the lid hinge pins & key missing. Nuremberg Germany, circa 1630. Measuring, 25" high x 45" wide x 26.5" deep (Weight is in excess of 200 pounds). Note: All iron chests, such as this example, were used to carry large sums or coinage required for paying armies such as those of the Thirty Years War. Chests of this size are exceptionally rare.
