Marshal of France, or Marshal of the Empire, was a title which had been abolished in 1793 but was reinstated by Napoleon in 1804. He appointed 26 Marshals between 1804 and 1815. Each of them is represented in this lot by a signed item. They are: Charles Pierre François Augereau (1807 ALS); Jean Baptiste Jules de Bernadotte (Signed pass into the Ministry of War--he was elected King of Sweden in 1818); Louis Alexandre Berthier (1800 DS); Jean-Baptiste Bessières (1798 ADS for rations); Guillaume Marie Anne Brune (1801 LS re promotion of an Italian officer); Louis Nicholas Davout (May 14,1815 PPDS--orders to Gen. Delaang as Min. of War); Laurent Gouvion St. Cyr (1815 LS as Min. of War); Emmanuel de Grouchy (1796 ALS to Vice Adm. Martin); Jean-Baptiste Jourdan (1830 LS); François Etienne Kellerman (LS); Jean Lannes (1806 LS); François-Joseph Lefebvre (LS as Gen. Com. Mil.
