[Manuscript/Ephemera] Collections of 7 Account Books from the 19th century in American, mostly New England and Pennslyvania. One from California and Illinois. (1) Isaac Taylor of Ashfield, Mass. Business and personal expenses/income together with notes as town assessor and census taker. 1835-1874. 1 v., 69pp. (2) [Stephen B. Eastman] of Fryeburg/Chatham area, Maine. Records of his farm and logging operations, grocery accounts, etc. 1865-67. 1 v., 40pp. (3) Account book kept in Friendship, [Maine]. Grocery and personal accounts of a local merchant. 1841-42. 1 v., 127pp. (4) A. J. Linscott of Santa Cruz, Calif. Ledger book of sales and purchases of hardware items (coffee mills, cleavers, porcelain door knobs), clothing, etc. Possibly a practice ledger from Chestnutwood’s Business College of Santa Cruz.1887-1888. 1 v., 98pp. (5) Henry Neuhausen of Walton, Illinois. Record of his personal and business expenses. 1902-1904. 1 v. (oblong), 94pp. (6) David S. Scott of Danville, Pa. “Expense Book” recording sums paid his father for clothing, a watch, seal, breastpin, etc. Record contains expenditures for cigars, postage, books, trips to Towanda and Berwick, dancing lessons, etc. There are several references to Isaac Post, possibly the radical Hicksite Quaker reformer. 1829-1840. 1 v., 46pp. (7) P. H. Green of Chester, Pa., area. Two vols. containing: farm accounts and sales of products (like scrapple), accounts of Joanne Doyle, who worked in the Green home for $1.50 per week, blacksmithing work, list of local subscribers of the American Agriculturalist magazine and of residents with assessed property values and road tax of road, work record on the Chichester Pike, and Green’s accounts with Chester Township. Two vols., 1861-1868 (125pp.) and 1871-1881 (86pp.).
