Description
[Manuscript/Ephemera] Three Unusual Civil War Items. (1) Drake DeKay. Autograph sentiment reading: "Entire submission or entire annihilation," May, 1861. In Dekay's characteristic huge lettering. A fine and patriotic example. Drake De Kay (1836-1886) Union staff officer brevetted lieutenant-colonel for his gallantry. De Kay served under Generals Mansfield, Pope and Hooker. (2) Judah P. Benjamin. Rare copy of his calling card, reading: "J. P. Benjamin, La" [1850s]. Used by Benjamin while he was a pre-war Senator from Louisiana. Benjamin (1811-1884) was the Confederate Secretary of State and the first Jewish person to hold a Cabinet position in the United States and the first elected to the Senate who had not renounced his faith. (3) (Gen. George McClellan). A manuscript letter by diplomat Norman B. Judd (1815-1878), intimate friend of Lincoln, to Gen. McClellan, written at the U.S. Legation in Berlin, Feb. 18, 1862. Judd recommends to McClellan's notice a Col. Augustus F. Schroer, a veteran of service in the Prussian and British armies. "He is so well recommended and so many persons take an interest in his success that I have departed from my rule heretofore acted upon of recommending no one, and would say that his appointment would be agreeable to the Legation and its position here." Schroer entered the Union Army shortly after.
