Rare 1789 Newspaper Containing News of Washington's Inauguration & Address

An issue of "The Herald of Freedom and the Federal Advertiser", Vol. II, No. 16. Printed by Edmund Freeman and Loring Andrews. 4pp, measuring 10" x 15.5", Boston, dated May 8, 1789. The first page contains news of the Inauguration of George Washington as the first President of the United States, along with his full inaugural address. Only four other copies of this newspaper are known, which are currently held in libraries or universities, such as the Library of Congress and the University of Michigan. The newspaper has flattened folds and chipping at the edges. Toning, faint foxing, and soiling throughout. Very good overall.

His Excellency was escorted from his house, by a troop of Light Dragoons, and the Legion under the command of Col. Lewis, attended by a Committee of the Senate and House of Representatives, to Federal Hall…when the oat prescribed by the constitution was administered to him by the Chancellor of this States, who then said - 'Long live GEORGE WASHINGTON, President of the United States,' which was answered by an immense concourse of citizens…"
