Washington Appoints Brig. Gen. who Served Under "Mad Anthony", and Distinguished Himself at Fort Recovery and the Battle of Fallen Timbers. Extremely Rare Format.
Rare DS, Washington D.C., dated March 19, 1793, appointing Leonard Covington a "Lieutenant of the Light Dragoons to take rank from the 25th of October 1792." The rare appointment is signed by President Washington as "Go: Washington", and countersigned by the Secretary of War Henry Knox. Expected folds, spotting to the left side of the document, scattered foxing, toning, and light wrinkling, all of which could be expertly repaired by a restorer to perfect a truly magnificent and rare document. 15.75" x 19.5".
This scarce document sold in 2006, a much weaker market for $11,950 at Heritage.
Leonard Covington was a United States Army brigadier general who served in the Northwest Indian War under Mad Anthony Wayne where he would distinguish himself at Fort Recovery, the Battle of Fallen Timbers and the War of 1812. Covington was mortally wounded in the Battle of Crysler's Farm and died three days later at French's Mills, New York.
