Martin "Marty" Cooper (b. 1928) is an American engineer most known for his contributions to the wireless communications industry. On April 3, 1973, he and his team at Motorola became the first to successfully place a call on a handheld cellphone, a distinct product from the car phone. As a result, he would subsequently lead the team that re-developed it and brought it to market a decade later in 1983.
