Clarence Seward Darrow (1857-1938) was an American lawyer who became known in the early 20th century for his eloquently presented defense cases. In 1924, Darrow took on the first case that would make his career renowned: that of Leopold and Loeb, two wealthy teenage law students who kidnapped and murdered a 14-year-old boy. As a stark advocate against the use of capital punishment, he presented his clients as mentally unwell in order to gain leniency with the judge. A year later in 1925, Darrow accepted teacher John T. Scopes as a client, who was convicted of breaking Tennessee's Butler Act which stated that, by law, schools could not deny Creationism as the sole evolutionary theory. The trial was highlighted by Darrow calling the trial's prosecutor, William Jennings Bryan, as a witness- questioning him on whether he thought the Bible should be literally interpreted.
