Description

Hartford CT Land Deed 1693

Manuscript Document Signed, "John Grant" and "Georg Grant", beside two red wax seals, 1p, 12.5" x 17", Hartford, May 4, 1693. Countersigned by Caleb Stanly as Assistant. Verso reads, "A Conveyance of Seventy two Acres of Up Land from John Grant & George Grant unto Wm. Pitkin Junr. Anno 1693". Expected age wear includes folds, a few small areas of paper loss, creasing, remnants of adhesive, and toning. Overall, in very good condition.

A land deed whereby John Grant and George Grant "of Hartford in the County of Hartford in the Colony of Connecticott in New England" transfer "One piece or parcell of UppLand Scituated Lying and being on the East Side of the Connecticott River in the Township of Hartford" unto William Pitkin Junior of Hartford. In 1690 he was appointed with Samuel Chester and Captain William Whiting to a commissioner to run the division-line between Connecticut and the Massachusetts colonies, and in that year he was sent by the colony to Governor Benjamin Fletcher, of New York, to negotiate terms respecting the militia until Governor Winthrop's return from England, whither he had gone for the same purpose.

The Pitkins were a politically prominent family in Hartford, with the first William Pitkin coming to the colony in 1659 from London to serve as the King's Attorney General. The family amassed a large fortune in the New World. By 1694, the eldest William Pitkin was the largest landholder in Hartford on the east side of the River, a fact made possible in part by the conveyance offered here. A scarce and early piece of American historical ephemera.
