A signed and inscribed portrait by New York Governor Al Smith. Measuring 8" x 10", New York, n.d. (ca. 1932). A photograph of Smith with Winston Churchill during a visit to the Empire State Building signed and inscribed below the image "To John J Jaffin with affectionate regard of Alfred Smith." Stamped on verso as copyrighted by "Daily News". Slightly curled and toned edges. Minor soiling throughout. Light scratching. Boldly signed.
Alfred E. Smith (1873-1944) served four terms as governor of New York and was the Democratic Party's presidential nominee in 1928; He was defeated in a landslide by incumbent Herbert Hoover. During a visit to the U.S. in 1932, Winston Churchill and his wife, Clementine, were escorted around the city by Smith. Churchill had visited in late 1931 to begin a lecture tour but was struck by a car on December 13. He spent a week in hospital, two more in bed at his hotel, and then an additional three weeks convalescing in the Bahamas. He was finally able to resume his tour in New York on January 28, 1932.
Dr. John J. Jaffin (1896-1964) was a high-profile dentist who's client list included Cary Grant, Fanny Brice, Jack Dempsey, and even Franklin D. Roosevelt.
