Description

19th century Japanese tobacco pipe consisting of 2 bronze/brass parts and a reed stem. The mouthpiece has paktong terminal, the rest is brass with incised pine tree and overlaid paktong tiger and a horrified old man. The subject illustrates a legend of Yoko (Yang Xiang in Chinese) - one of the paragons of filial piety. Yoko accompanied his father in the mountains, where a tiger sprang upon them. The boy jumped in front of his father, who was thus saved, but the boy was killed. The smoking part is incised with the continuation of the pine tree design. Excellent crisp work, great detailing of their body bulks and textures. Characteristic small bowl (Japanese used finely shredded tobacco, and usually made just 2-3 puffs), traces of tobacco residue. Wonderful old piece with pleasant signs of wear. Length 8 3/16 inches.
