After Teodoro Matteini (Italian, 1754-1831) A pair of paintings depicting two scenes from Orlando Furioso Oil on canvas 49-1/2 x 42 inches (125.7 x 106.7 cm) (oval) PROVENANCE: Cedric Dupont Antiques, West Palm Beach, Florida; Private collection, acquired from the above. The original works by Matteini, dated circa 1795, depict two scenes from Ludovico Ariosto's 16th-century epic, Orlando Furioso. The romance between Angelica and Medoro, shown in the present work scratching their names into a tree, inspired future adaptations of Ariosto's tale, focused solely on their love. Condition
Each work on strip-lined rectangular canvases with oval overlay. Stretcher bar marks at edges. Yellowing to the varnish layer. Finely patterned craquelure throughout, apparently stabilized beneath the varnish layer. Scattered pinpoint losses. Mild surface dirt and dust. Scattered small dots of darkened accretion. Not examined out of frame due to size.
Under UV: varnish fluoresces green unevenly. Considerable brushy retouching at edges and in the middle ground. Additional scattered, more finely applied retouching to figures and landscape.
