A pair of Chinese hardwood and jichimu side chairs 19th / 20th century

Each yoke-shaped crestrail centered by curved vertical splat, the rectangular seat with inset molded panel, above an arched and beaded apron, the back and side with plain spandrels, the rounded legs joined by stretchers of ascending height.

Note

A pair of chairs from this set was sold in these rooms October 14, 2021, lot 96; see R. Soame Jenyns and William Watson, "Chinese Art, The Minor Arts", Fribourg, 1963, pp. 390-391, no. 182, for one of the pair of lot 96, illustrated.

Haon was employed by E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, and was promoted in 1954 to the Foreign Relations Department as Manager of the European Office, London, England, until his retirement in 1962. Mr. Haon continued to live part-time in London into the late 1970s. It is believed that many of the Asian arts in his collection were acquired during this time in London.



Areas of slight fading to back of seat and stretchers, finish old and partially discolored, scattered small shrinkage cracks to wood with some associated fill, including to top of one crestrail, amd splat of other; surface soiling and scattered surface spotting; small shrinkage cracks to seat panels, seat panels shrunk across the grain; a few loose joints, small area of fill to one side stretcher; small spot of fill to one front spandrel, small area of fill to underside of oe side stretcher.
