Description
"The History of the United States: Told in One Syllable Words" by Miss Josephine Pollard, published by McLoughlin Brothers, undated (c.1898-1900); illustrated. [Note: Josephine Pollard died in 1892. The anonym author added to Pollard's text the final chapter on Spanish-American War and Treaty of Paris of 1898.
Hard boards, red cloth, decorated front board [some wear and soiling, spine damages and repairs: see photo], large format: 8" x 9.3/4"; stained endpapers, 136 pages + 6 chromolithographed color plates on glossy paper including frontispiece; some wear and yellowing paper, very good condition.
Books containing words of one syllable proliferated in the late nineteenth century as a way to teach children to read. Today, these books still serve that purpose and are very popular with homeschoolers and parents as a way to promote reading.
Josephine Pollard (1834-1892) was an American author and poet. Pollard published over a hundred hymns, and wrote numerous popular children's books mostly on religious and historical topics. She worked as an editor for the Sunday School Times and worked for the Methodist Book Concern, where she edited a magazine intended for African Americans. Pollard also wrote for other children's magazines such as The Little Corporal. Her poetry was published in a number of magazines including Harper's Magazine and Scribner's Magazine, as well as the New York Ledger. Her works have seen a recent resurgence as early readers, spurred by the home-school movement.
