Description
Pear jug with portrait medallions Raeren, dated 1561 Gray brown engobed stoneware with salt glaze. Raised, flared foot. On the wall three relief medallions with inscribed profile portraits of the Archbishop of Mechelen ''AN.PERRENOT.S.PBRI.CARD.ARCHIEPI.MECHL.'', King Philip of Spain ''PHILLIPVS.REX.PRINC.HISP.AET.S.AN.XXVII'' and Pope Pius IV ''PIUS.IIII.PONT.OPT.MAX.AN.I.''. On the shoulder base of the Archbishop of Mechelen-Brussels date 1561. At the level of the upper handle base relief frieze with Renaissance ornaments: Masks and floral motifs. Restored. Later pewter mount. H. 29 cm Provenance: Rudolf Leopold Collection, Vienna. Cardinal Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle was archbishop of the archbishopric of Mechelen-Brussels in 1561-1582. Pius IV (Giovanni Angelo Medici) was pope of the Catholic Church from 1559 to 1565.
