Gelatin silver photograph, from a copy photograph by Martin Behrman taken c.1910 of the 1851 original two-part daguerreotype. Image approx. 26x95 cm (10¼x37½"), taped into overmat.
Photographic view of San Francisco at the height of the Gold Rush, the Bay crowded with ships. Below the image, in a window in the mat, is a printed title label with key, and the statements "From Jenny Lind Theatre, Present Site of Hall of Justice"; and "From April 12, 1849 to year ending 1850, arrived 805 Vessels, 62000 Passengers". In lower margin of the print is the descriptor: "When Montgomery Street was the Water Front S.F. 1851 / 805 ships abandoned by Crew Joining Gold Rush." One of the original daguerreotypes making up this panorama is at the Bancroft library; the other one is thought to be lost. Provenance: Charles A. Fracchia Collection.
