South America, Argentina, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A matching pair of leather riding stirrups. The large discoidal panels are made entirely from several stiff leather panels riveted together and a pierced openwork motif of a horse running. The largest opening serve as the footrest. The thick leather attachment straps contact to an iron ring and the rest of the straps. Gaucho cowboys were proud of their station and took immense care of their tack, stirrups were symbols of their elite status. The leather and wood stirrups were likely made by the gaucho himself and maintained with regular cleaning - hence the lovely preservation of this pair!
