Jazz Age novel of the 'new generation' of young people "in the throes of new ideas in post-WWI England. The older generation facing youth with amazement and fear - frequently with unreasoning intolerance." The story follows the lives of mainly four youth, Mervyn and his sister Lettice, Jocelyn and his sister Nancy, and a couple side characters, Frank Hardy, Ivo Tremayne and David, an eccentric radical who becomes a friend of Jocelyn in Oxford and sways him into lobbying for Labor.

Sir Philip (Hamilton) Gibbs, 1877-1962, English journalist and author. As a result of his distinguished service in World War I as a front-line correspondent for the Daily Chronicle (London) he was knighted in 1920. Among his many novels are "The Street of Adventure" (1909), "The Middle of the Road" (1922), and "This Nettle Danger" (1939). He also wrote historical studies, astute commentaries on world events, and several autobiographical works, including "The Pageant of the Years" (1946).
