Description
Ca. 300 BC - 100 AD. A finely carved alabaster freestanding bull figure depicted standing alert on all four legs with nicely detailed hooves. The animal is naturalistically modelled with a heavy body, short horns, small ears, nostrils, and eyes down. Qataban, was one of the ancient kingdoms of Yemen that thrived in the Baihan Valley. It was located to the west of Hadramaut and to the east of the Sabaean kingdom. Like many other kingdoms of South Arabia, its economy was centered on the trade in frankincense and myrrh.Size: L:140mm / W:210mm ; 3.14kgProvenance: Private collection of a West London gentleman; previously in a collection formed on the UK/International art market in the 1980s.
