Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A woven textile panel fragment made from brightly dyed cotton or camelid fibers (alpaca or llama), framed in a modern wooden and glass case. The center contains 4 beige and white birds with stylized hooked beaks, each woven into the panel using an open weave technique that creates slits outlining their bodies. Bordering the avian register are geometric and curvilinear motifs in earthen brown hues and brighter red, navy blue, and black. Size (textile): 18.5" L x 6" W (47 cm x 15.2 cm); (frame): 21.8" L x 9.75" W (55.4 cm x 24.8 cm)
Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000

Fragment from larger textile. Light fraying to some interior and peripheral threads, light fading to original coloration, and small areas of tearing. Mounted in a modern wood and glass frame.
