Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 1000 to 1300 CE. Two earthtone textile fragments that are comprised of tightly-woven fibers in cream, brown, and blue hues. The composition of the smaller textile includes several areas of geometric motifs as well as two distinct and characteristically-abstract birds. The primary design of the larger textile is an abstract figure (a deity or shaman perhaps) with large feet, bent legs, a blue-toned face, large eyes, and an ornate headdress. Each textile is mounted on a fabric-lined cardboard backing. Size: 6" L x 4.25" W (15.2 cm x 10.8 cm) for the smaller textile; and 10.375" L x 7.75" W (26.4 cm x 19.7 cm) for the larger textile.
Provenance: private Slavin collection, acquired in Peru and Bolivia from 1971 to 1972
