Rookwood Pottery Vase by Edward George Diers (American, 1870-1947). Signed and numbered on base. The number of flames above R-K mark indicates it was made in 1896. A beautiful Rookwood ceramic vessel by Edward Diers presenting a classic form comprised of a piriform body, a straight neck, and twin handles bridging rim to shoulder. The exterior is decorated with a flowering branch of lemon yellow blossoms and spring green leaves over a ground of amber, olive green, and chocolate brown hues, with the interior embellished by chocolate brown at the neck and buttercup yellow over the remainder. This lustrous vessel is marked on the base with the Rookwood logo (a back-to-back "R" and "P" surrounded by 10 flames indicating the year 1896), identifying shape number "459E", and an "ED" (Edward Diers) artist's mark. A stunning ceramic vase by Rookwood artist Edward Diers that reflects the zeitgeist for organic motifs during the Arts and Crafts Movement! Size: 3.875" W at widest point x 4.125" H (9.8 cm x 10.5 cm)
The Rookwood Pottery Company was founded in 1880 by the artist Maria Longworth-Nichols who created a world-renowned ceramic studio in Cincinnati, Ohio that attracted many reputable artists and ceramicists. Edward George Diers was trained at the Ohio Mechanics Institute, the Industrial Art School and the Cincinnati Art Academy. Diers worked at Rookwood from 1896 until 1931.
Note: According to "The Book of Rookwood Pottery" by Herbert Peck (1968) p. 136, "To represent the year 1887, one flame point was placed above the R-P mark. Another flame point was added for each year until there were fourteen flame points for the year 1900." This piece has 10 flame points around the R-P mark, indicating it was made in 1896.
