Bonnie Halsey-Dutton (American, Contemporary). "Primal Hunt" oil on panel, 2010. Signature and date on lower right. Signature, title, and date on verso. An arresting oil on panel painting of a tribal bison hunt over the interior hide walls of a tepee by Bonnie Halsey-Dutton that pays homage to the stories the indigenous peoples have traditionally told within teepees. In addition to this culturally significant theme, Halsey-Dutton's composition is undeniably striking. Note how the tepee poles draw our eyes upward to the opening and its view of the sky above; while simultaneously, the hunters on horseback dramatically spiral in pursuit of the running bison leading us toward the apex as well! A showstopper of a painting set in a gorgeous, museum-quality wooden frame. Size(painting): 36" L x 24" W (91.4 cm x 61 cm) Size (frame): 36.8" L x 24.8" W (93.5 cm x 63 cm)

Bonnie Halsey-Dutton was born and raised in South Dakota and is inspired by the local cultures where she resides as well as their history. Here is her statement about this painting, "The dependence early man had on the bison is evident in rock carvings still found across the Great Plains of North America. A successful hunt was primal to the tribe's survival, as the bison provided virtually everything needed. A dramatic hunting of the bison is depicted in my painting, showing imagery of the hunt, as found in ledger art recorded by various tribes. Depicted here is the hunt once horses came into use. The dramatic motion and danger of the hunt is depicted in the telling of the story. The bison hide, being the source of shelter, emphasizes the importance of this great animal to the Native American Indian tribes."

Dr. Halsey-Dutton is both a professional visual artist and a fine arts educator, holding a PhD in Art History and Education from the University of Arizona. She exhibits her artwork both nationally and internationally, and also teaches art education workshops at home and abroad.
