Three White Jade Animal Carvings, The first a mandarin duck resting on a lotus leaf and grasping a lotus flower branch; the second a recumbent badger grasping a lingzhi fungus branch; the third a double-badger group also with a branch of lingzhi fungus. 18th Century, Longest: 2 1/8 inches (5.4 cm) Provenance:Samuel Brownlee Fisher of St. Louis, Missouri, circa 1900, and thence by descent within the family to the present owner. [Small chips. This condition report states major condition issues only] The motif of combining two badgers in Chinese art has the meaning of a rejoicing couple. This is because the Chinese character for badger 'huan' is a pun for conjugal joy, thus the two badgers theme signifies the a couple rejoicing together.
