Description
American, 1751-1801. Oil on canvas, unsigned. Bewigged musician seated at a window with sailing ships flying English flags, nearby is a table with music scores and a flute. Restoration including early rebacking on canvas and some inpainting with flaking. Unframed, 51"h. 38.5"w. Ex Melba Hunt, Geneen Jacobs, ex Peter Tillou. The stretcher has illegible chalk notations and an added notation "Capt. Cook". Earl did work in England but had not arrived there by the time Cook left for his final voyage in 1776.
