Description

Pre-Columbian, central highlands of Peru, Inca culture, ca. 1350 to 1500 CE. By far the most well known and "popular" of the pre-contact South American cultures, the Inca were also perhaps the most talented weavers. A very large and stunning textile tunic woven of native cotton and camelid fibers in bold colors of red, green, blue, tan, brown , off-white, and pink. It features a number of human characters in various poses including warriors, shamans, and others along with birds, snakes, and undefined zoomorphs. Particularly fine are the warriors with their crested headdresses and long spears. A very important example! Size (textile not including backing): 43" W x 39" H (109.2 cm x 99.1 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany
