Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney Titanic Memorial Maquette, plaster sculpture with wax overlay, portrait bust study for the head portion of her USS Titantanic White Star Line shipwreck victims memorial statue, 8.5 x 5.6 inches, 15 x 10.375 x 12.5 inches overall object including wooden plinth on platform base, unsigned. The creation of the Titanic Memorial that now stands along the Potomac in Washington, DC including the illustration of preliminary sketches and an early bronze version is discussed in Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney Sculpture by Roberts who notes that the figure model for the statue was her studio assistant Ramon. See condition notes below. Provenance: This is the personal example kept by noted sculptor Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, founder of the Whitney Museum and great granddaughter of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, removed by our staff from her landmark Old Westbury, Long Island, NY studio this past November during real estate staging. Decorated with murals by prominent Gilded Age to Art Deco artist colleagues and the site of legendary soirees attended by a Whos Who of actors, painters and philanthropists, the property has been listed for sale, emptied of contents and staged for its real estate sale listing. Condition

Wax is cracked with separation and heavy unstable crazing, fine paint spatter, wear to plaster at base, plinth is split, very dirty and missing front platform molding. Note that buyer may wish to give extra consideration to post sale transportation to avoid object being subjected to hot, cold or varying temperatures by shipping courrier.
