Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney 5ft Battle Bronze With Study II, Battle Scene No. 2 for the Madison Square Victory Arch, a soldier with his arm raised advances before an image of the artists The Law, alternately Youth, with soldiers on both sides in various action depictions, wall relief sculpture with accompanying full size framed pencil study, this is one of two companion 65 inch wide bronze reliefs each with their full sized framed pencil studies being offered as individual subsequent lots in this sale, one of six bronzes from the artists studio widely publicized gardens, now in storage in the Greater NY NJ CT TriState area, this bronze and its framed pencil study for pick up by appt 1 hour from Manhattan, all items other than the six garden bronzes are Florida pick up or shipping, bronze 24 x 65 x 6.5 inches, study 27.75 x 67.25 sight, 29.25 x 69 x 1.5 inches framed, no visible signature to bronze or drawing however there were some surrounding vine and leaf residues and a beam shelf obscuring some edge areas of bronze during inspection. Provenance: This is the personal example kept by noted scupltor Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, founder of the Whitney Museum and great granddaughter of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, removed by our staff from her landmark Old Westbury, Long Island, NY studio this past November during real estate staging. Decorated with murals by prominent Gilded Age to Art Deco artist colleagues and the site of legendary soirees attended by a Whos Who of actors, painters and philanthropists, the property has been listed for sale, emptied of contents and staged for its real estate sale listing.
