Description
Originally listed at $1,400...
Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Chihuahua region, Casas Grandes (Paquime) culture, ca. 1200 to 1450 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery olla of round-bottomed form with tapered walls, a deep basin, and a thick rim bearing an abstract anthropomorphic face projecting from one side. The tan-orange ground features intricately painted red and black motifs in linear, spiraling, and geometric forms along the upper body while the lower body is undecorated. The protruding visage bears slit-form eyes and mouth, tab-shaped ears, a slender nose, and stepped motifs across the cheeks, perhaps suggestive of ritual cicatrices. Size: 7.3" Diameter x 7.5" H (18.5 cm x 19 cm)
Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, before 2010; Ex-Virginia Museum of Art; Ex-Platt & Friedenberg collection, 1960 -1990; Ex-Arte Primitivo, New York, New York, USA
