Description
Blue And White Interlocking Flower Kendi Length:14cm, Height:23cm, Inspired by a metal prototype, superbly potted with a pear-shaped body resting on a bulbous stem and stepped foot, gracefully rising to a waisted neck sweeping up to a flared rim with rolled lip, the body set with a long facetted spout tapering to a lipped rim, boldly painted around the body in vibrant cobalt-blue tones with characteristic ‘heaping and piling’ with hibiscus blooms wreathed by a foliate meander of trefoil leaves, all above a band of stylised flowerheads against blue washes and a row of lotus lappets between raised fillets, the knopped stem encircled by a simplified key-fret band above stylised lappets and tri-lobed ruyi motifs, all above a band of hemispherical ball flowers arranged in a chevron manner, the underside of the rim and the foot encircled by a band of pearls on a ground of blue wash, the long spout painted with a stylised lotus meander between broad ruyi lappets, the top of the rim encircled by a band of stylised floral scroll within line borders, applied overall with a transparent unctuous glaze. Chingwah Lee (1901-1980), was a well-known Chinese antique dealer in San Francisco, and because of his eloquence and connections, he was commissioned to purchase props and sets for all films involving the East themes in Hollywood in the 1930s. In 1931, when Pearl Sydenstricker Buck’s novel The Good Earth was published and won the Pulitzer Prize the following year, he was commissioned by MGM to recruit actors in China and North America for a film adaptation. Lee later appeared in films such as Flower Drum Song, The Rainbow Pass, Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo and Little Mister Jin. He worked as a Chinese language instructor for the Ministry of Defence until the outbreak of World War II. When Lee died in 1980, his estate was auctioned by Sotheby's for over a million dollars, and almost every connoisseur went to the auction, with many of the finest pieces still in market today. Some pieces offered for sale in this sale are unique in that they were not very popular in the United States at that time, so auction house only offered them for pre-sale to a small number of antique dealers, which is how the current collector acquired them, forty years ago. Reference: A comparable example was sold for 99,320,000 HKD at Sotheby’s,05 Apr 2016, Lot 15.
