Description
Horrific set of twelve prints by Holocaust artist Hugo Walleitner, 5 x 6 in. (sight), depicting some of the atrocities he witnessed during his internment at Flossenberg Concentration camp. Just a sampling of the cruelties displayed here includes: a smiling camp guard in SS uniform whipping a bleeding and starved prisoner while he is on the ground; a guard nonchalantly holding a loaded revolver to a prisoner's head; a group of camp officers dining and laughing, while the hanging bodies of three nude female prisoners loom in the background; a crying woman, not in prisoner's garb, suffering near the camp fence, either being electrocuted or jabbed by barbed wire; a pleased camp guard overlooking six hung and malnourished prisoners, while he holds a bottle of wine and smokes a cigarette; and more. Each is matted and framed to a total size of 9.5 x 10.5 in. Fine condition. Walleitner was a prisoner in the Flossenburg concentration camp for over three years. After his release, he published a factual report titled 'Zebra', describing the millions of deaths behind the scenes of the Third Reich. This report is illustrated by 34 of his own sketches - presumably including many of those shown here.
