Description
Genuine World War I award of Imperial Germany, the Pour Le Merite, also known as Blue Max, the highest award granted for military merit. The gold medal depicts a blue enameled Maltese Cross featuring the Prussian royal cypher and the gilt text 'Pour Le Merite' ('For Merit'), with gold-plated eagles set between the gold framed arms of the cross. Some flaking to the enamel, as is commonly seen with neck orders after they have been worn simultaneously with other awards such as the Knights Cross. The lower arm of the cross has been marked '18k' on the bottom right edge, and the other arms bear minor divets indicating this piece has been successfully tested for gold, no other markings present. Complete with an unmarked suspension loop and original, full-length black and silver ribbon. The medal incl. the suspension ring weighs 33.58 grams. Excellent condition for a period worn piece. Presented in a 9.5 x 7.5 in. modern wood and glass case.
