(1818 - 1869) Union major general at Shiloh and Perryville, he headed the District of Nashville when Hood led his disastrous attack. Fine content war-date A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., ‘In Camp’, July 21, 1863, sent to Gen. George H. Thomas. In part: ‘...I send you Mr. Field, who will explain to you his knowledge of matters at C. I think him entirely reliable, and have no hesitation in trusting him. He is just from C...’ Signed at the conclusion as major general. The ‘C’ referred to in this letter stands for Chattanooga. Field was sent by Rousseau to serve as an informant for Thomas on the goings on at Chattanooga. Lightly soiled, else very good.
