(1857-1937) American cartoonist, regarded as one of the pioneers of American newspaper comic strips, best known for his comic strip Happy Hooligan. Good content early T.L.S. on New York American and Journal letterhead, 1p. oblong 8vo., New York, July 14, 1902 to a 'Mr. Keary'. In part: '...I have received...proofs of four of the 'Antediluveans'...Mr. [Robert W.?] Service has not as yet sent me any information as to the progress in the preparation of the book...send me these to look at...that will not delay the work...Many thanks for what you have to say as to 'Alphonse and Gaston' and 'Happy Hooligan'. I have no doubt that that the arrangement you have made with Mr. Hearst will add to their popularity; I hope it will...' A clean tear from right margin about 2 in. into text, archivally repaired on verso, else fine.
