Description
Offered in this lot is an Antique Native American Textile Folk Art Handmade Doll Clothes Framed, After Native American Hopi, circa early to mid 1900s. Women’s traditional clothing in ancient times consisted plain cotton knee-length dress called a "manta". The manta is square in shape and is fastened at the right shoulder.A narrow woven belt wrapped around the waist.Later on, blue-black mantas replaced the undyed cotton mantas. Beginning in the 1900s, women began to wear a cloth blouse or dress under the manta. A square silk scarf decorated with lace or satin ribbon around the edges is worn as a sort of cape. This framed textile art is in very nice condition. The hand stitching and weaving are precise, the textile colours are vegetal dyes made from local native plants including roots, berries, flowers, leaves, moss, bark, and even seeds, all of which will vary depending on the growing season. The gold gilt hardwood matted frame is in good overall condition, very slight scuffing noted to edges, no other obvious marring noted. Visible art measures 5.5"W x 8.5"L, frame is 10.75"W x 13.75"L x .75"D
