Early Report on the Death of George Washington, Original 1799 Newspaper
[George Washington]. Newspaper, The Connecticut Courant, 4pp, 12.25" x 19.5", Hartford, December 23, 1799. Published by Hudson & Goodwin, Vol. XXXIV, No. 1732. Professional repair at top right corner of first page. Some minor holes at blank spine where it was disbound. Expected wear includes edge chipping, a few small areas of paper loss, soiling and scattered foxing, else in very good condition.
The highlight of this issue is the very early report of George Washington's death, in a brief notice on the first column of page three. It reads, in full, "Hartford, December 23 / A letter from a member of Congress dated 18th of December, to his friend in New-Haven, says, 'The illustrious General Washington; is no more.' / The time of his death is not mentioned." George Washington died on December 14, 1799.
Spanning nearly the whole of the last page, "An ACT to to Regulate Trade and Intercourse with the Indian Tribes, and to preserve Peace on the Frontiers", detailing all twenty-one sections of the treaty. An illustration of a spread-winged eagle holding an "E. PLURIBUS UNUM" banner in its beak is featured at top.
The Connecticut Courant began as a weekly newspaper, becoming daily in 1837. It is now known as The Hartford Courant and is the largest daily newspaper in Connecticut. It is considered the oldest continuously published newspaper in the United States.
