Founding Father Oliver Wolcott Sr. Clipped Signature
Clipped signature, measuring 3.5" x 1.5" and mounted on a larger sheet to the overall size of 4.25" x 2.75", n.p., undated. A cut piece of a larger letter, boldly signed "Your obedient servant/Oliver Wolcott". Some docketing present on attached sheet. General toning throughout, with evidence of ink bleeding through from verso, not affecting signature. Overall, a very good example.
Oliver Wolcott Sr. (1726-1797) was an American founding father and politician from Connecticut who, as a representative of the state, signed both the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation. Wolcott was also a major general in the Revolutionary War for the Connecticut militia serving under George Washington, and later became the state's nineteenth Governor succeeding fellow Declaration signer Samuel Huntington. His son, Oliver Wolcott Jr. (1760-1833), would become the second U.S. Secretary of the Treasury and the twenty-fourth Governor of Connecticut.
