Charles Lindberg Signed Iwo Jima Photograph of the First Flag Raising
Excellent black and white 8" x 10" photograph of the FIRST flag raising atop Mount Suribachi. Signed and inscribed by Charles Lindberg "Charles Lindberg /1st Flag Raiser Iwo Jima, /Feb 23, 1945, 10:30 A.M.". Fine condition. Small neat sheet taped to verso with a typed description of the photo.
When starting to climb Mount Suribachi, photographer Lou Lowry, fearing that the patrol might not reach the summit, asked the men to hold up the flag for the picture (Charles Lindberg was first in line). Out of the 40-man platoon that made the climb up Suribachi and raised the First American Flag on captured Japanese territory, 36 were killed or wounded in the subsequent fight on Iwo Jima.
