Item Details
Description
Rare carte de visite (CDV) photograph of Chief Kanosh and Ute tribesmen, taken in Salt Lake City by Savage and Ottinger. Important and scarce view of eight members of the Ute nation.

Chief Kanosh (1821-1884) was leader of the Ute tribe in the mid-19th century. He was known for his peaceful relations with European-American settlers and for his efforts to maintain his people's autonomy and way of life despite the pressures of westward expansion. The Utes were known to trade with the Mormons, and some Ute people even converted to Mormonism, including Chief Kanosh.

Important and scarce view.
