Item Details
Description
A scarce French lithograph of a scene from Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin entitled “Evangeline and Tom.” The lithograph, which is delicately hand-colored and in fine condition overall, is housed in a period frame that appears original to its publication in the mid-1800s.

Stowe wrote the Evangeline St. Clare character as the frail, angelic daughter of a Southern slave owner who befriends Uncle Tom, a slave. This lithograph depicts their first meeting on a boat headed south. This is a scarce Uncle Tom’s Cabin-related item, and evidence of the international effect the book had on the abolitionist movement. Queen Victoria is said to have wept while reading it.
