Item Details
Description
Carte de visite (CDV) photograph of Thaddeus Stevens. Reverse bears the imprint of Whitehurst, a photographer operating in Washington D.C.

Thaddeus Stevens was one of the leaders of the abolitionist movement in the United States during the mid to late 19th century. He represented Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1849 until his death in 1868. He was known for his fierce opposition to slavery and his speeches in favor of civil rights for African Americans. After the Civil War, Stevens played a leading role in the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson and the passage of the Reconstruction Acts, which aimed to rebuild the South and extend civil rights to newly freed slaves.
