Description
2pp. Affidavit dated December 6, 1863 that states a slave, named Robert, was well when he arrived to work on the Confederate fortifications at James Island near Charleston, SC, but fell ill within two weeks and was sent to a hospital by a Confederate surgeon.
The overseer of slaves working on James Island is listed as being a Samuel Dagwell, and the slave belonged to W.F. Prescott. The document reads in part:
“He was well when he arrived here and remained so for about two weeks after being sent to James Island to work on fortifications by Confederate authorities. That said Robert was sick in quarters for some days before he was sent to the hospital by the Surgeon. I saw the boy in the hospital sick.”
The second page is his affirmation of the above statement, written from Edgefield District, South Carolina. Dagwell must have been illiterate, as he signed his name with an “x.” This document was likely produced as a result of a compensation claim made by Robert’s enslaver, W.F. Prescott.
