Description
Civil War-era carte de visite photo of an African American soldier. There looks to be a brass company letter on the front of his kepi. The tab style on the shoulders of his uniform jacket may indicate an association with New York State troops. The image bears the back mark of Hoyt, a photographer who operated in Cuba, New York, which also adds to the evidence that the subject served in an “Empire State” regiment. The carte is in strong condition; the bottom edge was trimmed to fit an album.
