Description
Sixth plate daguerreotype of a man holding a wooden stick. It is a curious object, since it’s clearly not a cane or walking stick. Why would the subject decide it merited inclusion in his portrait? It has been suggested that the mystery stick might be a “divining rod.”
A divining rod, also known as a dowsing rod, is a tool traditionally used for the purpose of locating underground water, minerals, or other hidden materials. Divining rods have been used for centuries, mainly in rural areas.
Interesting image. Housed in a half leatherette case.
[Antique Photography, Daguerreotype, Ambrotype, Albumen, carte-de-visite, CDV, Tintype]
