Description
To Have and Have Not by Ernest Hemingway. First Edition, First Printing. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1937. Scribner's "A" and seal on the copyright page. Original black full cloth boards without dust jacket. Gilt facsimile signature stamped onto the front board. Crisp gilt spine titles with multiple bands on sharp green fields.
"To Have and Have Not" is a novel by Ernest Hemingway set in Key West, Florida during the Great Depression. It tells the story of a down-on-his-luck fisherman, Harry Morgan, who is forced to turn to illegal activities to make ends meet. Through his experiences, Hemingway explores themes of poverty, class struggles, and the consequences of desperate actions. The novel is known for its stark, simple language and its use of Hemingway's signature "Iceberg theory" of writing, where only a fraction of the story is told, leaving much unsaid. It is considered a classic of 20th-century American literature.
Good condition. Light rubbing, light scuffs and spots on the front cloth board, binding fairly loose, acid stains and soiling on the front and rear pastedowns, endpapers lightly foxed, and occasional soiling or stains throughout.
