Description

Wonderful Christmas gift for a collector of children’s books, offered with a low reserve. Clean and sound, scarce first edition of one of the iconic books of all time. Ostensibly a children’s story but it also deals with issues that everyone can relate to. The story follows a young prince who visits various planets in space including Earth, and addresses themes of loneliness, friendship, love, and loss. Despite its style as a children's book, The Little Prince makes poignant observations about life and human nature. There are five points that indicate a true first edition. They are all present in this example: (1) Salmon cloth cover with maroon titles. (2) Published 1943 by Reynal & Hitchcock. (3) Copyright 1943 with no other published dates. (4) Flower (rose) illustration on page 27. (5) Five-line colophon at the rear in italics. The Little Prince written and drawn by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. Tips are just starting to show and there is some fraying at head of spine and a very small bit at foot of spine. Repaired 2” tear in cover cloth at top near spine. A completely straight binding with no tears or marks inside except for half-dollar size stains at the bottom of pages 46 and 47. 7.5 x 9. 93 pp.
