Santos Painted Tin Nicho - Dating back to the Spanish Colonial period, the tradition of creating ornately decorated vertical "diorama box", or nichos, has come to define Mexican folk art. Nichos are small, hand-made tin boxes constructed to display lovingly crafted scenarios. This example has painted Catholic religious scenes including Jesus on the cross and Our Lady of Guadalupe. The center is reserved for a santos doll, or other similar icon. The front of the boxes has smaller kneeling figures suspended in air, along with some farm animals. Measures 16.5”h x 11”w.
